The theater was founded on November 1, 2018, with the support of the Akimat of Astana. Its first artistic director was Tursynbek Kabatov, an Honored Worker of Kazakhstan.
In 2020, the theater was named after Azerbaijan Madiyevich Mambetov, Khalyk Kaharmany, People’s Artist of the USSR and Kazakhstan, laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR and Kazakhstan, and an outstanding theater and film director. Since then, the theater has been known as the Azerbaijan Mambetov State Drama and Comedy Theater.
