Astana has been named one of the 15 finalists of the first WIPO City of Innovation 2026 Award, launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The capital of Kazakhstan is the only Central Asian city to reach the final.
The award recognizes cities that create an environment for innovation and creativity. The competition evaluates not only existing projects, but also cities’ concrete commitments and development plans for the next 12 months.
In its application, Astana presented a comprehensive approach to digital development. One of the key areas is Astana Smart City — an intelligent urban management system based on artificial intelligence and data. It is designed to connect information systems, IoT sensors, transport infrastructure, video streams and the city’s digital twin within a unified intelligent environment.
Another key direction is the development of Astana.kz based on the “city as a service” model. The platform is envisioned as a single digital space where residents can access personalized services and interact with the city through an AI-powered assistant.
The city also plans to further develop its innovation ecosystem — from education and startup acceleration to research and development and bringing technology solutions to international markets.
Astana’s concept therefore brings together digital technologies, artificial intelligence, startup development, urban sustainability and accessibility.
The results of the first WIPO City of Innovation Award will be announced on October 12 in Geneva. Up to three cities will be selected as winners following the international evaluation.
